Daihitsu Hijet! 4-spd with a 2-spd transfer case and part-time 4wd. It’s a cheek-pincher for sure- not to mention fun on a bun to drive.
He’s having a lot of difficulty getting it registered here even though it came with an out-of-state title. Sounds like CO is just being a pain about it.

If you find out how this is to drive in normal traffic, or how economical it is report back here please! I want an excuse to convince myself to buy one of these

this is what i would do with one of those
stick a plow on it and perfect Mr plow replacement

Did he pay the $5000 that it seems like these are for sale for?

fun on a bun
I’m stealing that phrase

I didn’t ask- wasn’t my place. Happy that I get to sit in it and make truckly noises for just the cost of a tank of gas though!

no! give it back!

never

Not likely as he’s having lots of trouble plating it here, but I’ll report back if I find out.
It’s fun to drive though- that should be enough reason?

Your friend is a hero of mine lol

Soooo by off chance did your friend buy it from NJ? I know some importers who had 4-5 kei trucks and just recently sold them
![]() 09/03/2019 at 12:15 |

Negative, an importer in VA if I recall.

I’ve hear Colorado is notoriously difficult to register imported vehicles. That’s how Mercedes got a free 1st gen Smart. The owner gave up trying to register it, and gave it away, as it was essentially worthless to him.

You don’t watch futurama?

I keep considering buying one of these as a winter car if I find it cheap enough. How slow is it?
![]() 09/03/2019 at 12:44 |

Not sure, its temp tags are expired and I only got to operate it in the yard. But with a 660cc engine and a 4-speed, I’d think not too fast.
![]() 09/03/2019 at 12:46 |

That’s a VA temp tag on the window, so that seems to check out.

Not regularly, contrary to what my username might have you believe.

They’re not that fast, but they are not as slow as you’d think...660cc engines, sure, but they’re pretty light.

Is his 25 years old or older? Otherwise, I’m not sure how US laws work State to State, but in Canada as long as it’s 15 years old or older and meets the usual DOT requirements, you can pretty much register anything...?
![]() 09/03/2019 at 13:40 |
|
You’d think so.
![]() 09/03/2019 at 14:49 |

One major hurdle is in most places, Ontario for sure, is you need insurance to be able to even register it in your name.
![]() 09/03/2019 at 14:51 |

That would be enough reason except after seeing the prices on these I was considering one for a flip. Get it shipped, fix a few niggles and then sell it for some of the astounding prices I’ve seen these listed for
![]() 09/03/2019 at 14:53 |

IMO, a 25 year old one seems like it should be a $1500-2500 utility vehicle to me.
I also feel like these should be more common than other UTVs like Gators, Polaris Rangers, etc.

I’m in Canada so it’s 15 years, and I’ve seen some nicer ones listed for around 8-9000 CAD, assuming they actually sell for that. But I agree I was baffled as I agree they shouldn’t be more than 5000$ for a real nice one
![]() 09/03/2019 at 15:05 |

Would you drive it around town and highway?
![]() 09/03/2019 at 15:05 |

Ah fair

He stole that phrase from bender is why I ask lol
![]() 09/03/2019 at 16:51 |

Yeah, there is a markup here in Canada for them due to the shipping costs and import fees. I’d think they’d be 5-6k max though...they can be had at auction there for really cheap...

I’ve seen a few kei trucks doing just that around here and they seemed to keep up just fine.

Please don’t tempt me
![]() 09/03/2019 at 18:20 |

That’s promising. I’ll just be sure to get a manual to be able to utilize every cc

I think Kei trucks with autos of that generation are pretty rare...not sure about new ones. I know most Kei cars since the mid 2000's are pretty much all CVT or Auto-only with a few exceptions...sad!

CVT = continuous void transmission.
